Procedure for Chancellor Search

The Southern University System is committed to an open process in the search for a Chancellor of Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The search will be conducted in a fair and competitive manner.  Candidates will be sought from around the nation, as well as within Louisiana and the Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College System.

bulletEstablishment of a Search Committee 

The president of the Southern University System will appoint members of the Search Committee for Chancellor of the Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The president shall invite representatives from the following constituencies, through their recognized organizations or associations, to form the Chancellor’s Search Committee

    1. Faculty representatives
    2. Student representatives
    3. Administrative representatives
    4. Staff representatives
    5. Alumni representatives
    6. Business community representatives
    7. Community leaders, and
    8. Other constituent representatives appointed by
      the president of the Southern University System

bulletIdentification of Candidates

Advertisement of the position will be handled by the Office of the President. Advertisements will be placed in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine, through notification of the position vacancy to national associations, higher education systems and institutions, and in other media.  In addition, persons interested in the institution are encouraged to recommend and nominate individuals for the position.  If desired, a search firm may be utilized to assist in this chancellor search process.

Nominations/applications should be submitted to the Chair of the Search Committee. Each nomination/application will be acknowledged by letter.  Applicants will be requested to voluntarily provide demographic information needed to complete mandatory reports.  The search process will remain open until the position is filled.

bulletTimetable      

An appropriate timetable will be developed for the Chancellor Search.  The anticipated date of employment is July 1, 2008; however, the search will remain open until the position is filled. 


bulletFinal Evaluation and Selection of Finalist(s)

The president and Search Committee shall develop a process for the evaluation and selection of finalist(s) to be recommended to the Board of Supervisors. 

The board chair, vice chair, president and board counsel shall discuss the terms for the appointment of the chancellor of Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The Board of Supervisors and president shall extend an offer of employment to the selected candidate.  If the candidate accepts the offer, he or she will sign acceptance and employment documents. The person selected to fill the post of chancellor of Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana shall assume his duties upon notification by the president of the effective employment date. 

bulletFinal Authority

Nothing in this process shall be construed to diminish in any way the final and complete authority of the President and Board of Supervisors to select the Chancellor of Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge and to set the terms and conditions of the chancellor's employment.
