Position Announcement

The Southern University System invites nominations and applications for the position of chancellor at Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  As the chief administrative officer, the chancellor is responsible for the administration of all activities of the campus including, but not limited to, academic, financial, student, and administrative affairs, and other support functions.  The chancellor reports to the Southern University System President and through the president to the Board of Supervisors as required.

Founded in 1880, Southern University and A&M College (SUBR) is a Carnegie Masters/Comprehensive level institution offering four-year, graduate, professional, and doctoral degree programs and is a leader in providing unique academic programs, innovative research, and community service. SUBR has more than 8,500 students and a faculty and staff of 1,754, with an annual operating budget of approximately $151 million.  With the implementation of new doctoral degree programs and increased participation in research, the University anticipates a Carnegie classification change from a Four-Year III classification (comprehensive) to a Doctoral University II, Research Intensive classification in the future.  In addition to the Baton Rouge campus, the Southern University System, the nation’s only historically black university system, has campuses in New Orleans and Shreveport, and a Law Center and Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Baton Rouge, with a total student population of more than 13,000, and nearly 2,500 faculty, staff and administrative employees.

Preferred Qualifications                                        

The Southern University System seeks to appoint a dynamic, visionary individual with a proven record of leadership which demonstrates excellence in academic and intellectual accomplishments, significant administrative experiences in higher education, and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and stakeholders to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.  The successful candidate will have:

    1. five to seven years of progressive and
      responsible experience in higher education
      administration, financial management, resource
      development or related skills, and student and
      faculty recruitment.

    2. outstanding oral and written communication skills
      and strong interpersonal skills.

    3. experience in academic and strategic planning,
      (which includes establishing and implementing
      graduate level academic programs) and effective
      human resource and budgetary management.

    4. demonstrated experience in achieving the mission
      of a four-year institution.

    5. broad knowledge of methods in developing and
      initiating articulation agreements with two-year
      and other higher educational institutions and a
      background in successfully forming partnerships with
      public schools in order to enhance enrollment
      efforts and the development of programs that
      respond to community needs.

    6. an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
